When students are starting their college life, they may approach every course, test, or learning task the same way, using what we like to call “the rubberstamp approach.” Think about it this way: Would you wear a tuxedo to a baseball game? A colorful dress to a funeral? A bathing suit to religious services? Probably not. You know there’s appropriate dress for different occasions and settings. Skillful learners know that “putting on the same clothes” won’t work for every class.
They are flexible learners. They have different strategies and know when to use them. They know that you study for multiplechoice tests differently than you study for essay tests. And they not only know what to do, but they also know how to do it.
대학 생활을 시작할 때 학생들은 우리가 ‘고무도장방식’이라고 부르고 싶은 방법을 이용하여, 모든 과목이나, 시험, 학습 과제를 똑같은 방식으로 접근할지도 모른다. 그것을 이런 식으로 생각해 보라. 여러분은 야구 경기에 턱시도를 입고 가겠는가? 장례식에 화려한 드레스를 입고 가겠는가? 종교적인 예식에 수영복을 입고 가겠는가? 아마 아닐 것이다. 다양한 행사와 상황마다 적합한 옷이 있음을 여러분은 알고 있다. 숙련된 학습자는 ‘같은 옷을 입는 것’이 모든 수업에 효과가 있지는 않을 것임을 알고 있다. 그들은 유연한 학습자이다. 그들은 다양한 전략을 갖고 있으며 그것을 언제 사용해야 하는지 안다. 그들은 선다형 시험은 논술 시험을 위해 학습하는 것과는 다르게 학습한다는 것을 안다. 그리고 그들은 무엇을 해야 하는지 알고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 그것을 어떻게 해야 하는지도 알고 있다.
